Earthquake magnitude is logarithmic. A magnitude 6 earthquake doesn't represent 20% more energy than a magnitude 5 — it releases roughly 32 times as much. Modern large-earthquake reporting uses moment magnitude (Mw); the "Richter scale" people commonly refer to is rarely the actual measurement anymore.
